Different Aspects of Health

Self esteem decision making wellness

If you see someone jogging, someone thin with well-defined muscles running at a steady pace through the street, you automatically assume this person is healthy. There are more aspects to 'being healthy' than being fit and having a healthy weight, namely mental aspects. What you don't know about that person is that although he seems healthy on the outside, he might actually struggle on the inside. Maybe he has self esteem issues, and is only working out not because he wants to, but because of the societal pressure of guys being expected to look like Abercrombie and Fitch models. Suddenly, this person out jogging doesn't seem as healthy anymore. Now, being 'pressured' into working out isn't bad, in fact, it's good for you. However, smaller things often lead to bigger things. If this guy wasn't strong enough to stand up to small things, how is he supposed to stand up to the bigger things? Before you know it, looking buff and model-like isn't enough to fit into society anymore. Suddenly you're expected to smoke and get drunk every weekend in order to 'fit in.' This is why mental health matters. Having a higher self esteem usually means you feel confident enough to make decisions for yourself, rather than feeling the need to please others, which also usually means making better decisions (though this is not always the case.) Just feeling good about yourself adds to your overall wellness. Someone who is thin and good-looking, but always feel horrible about themselves are not as healthy as those who might not be as thin or pretty but do.
